The Flowers are back in town.
The hanging baskets of petunias now adorn 350 light poles in the City. They will be in place until mid March. This year The Planter People have a new strain of petunias that will drape over the pots better and provide a stunning show of flowers.

New Fairy Lights

Canberra CBD Limited has installed more fairy lights in the trees along City Walk, Petrie Plaza and Ainslie Place. Traditionally the new lights are switched on early December with the Xmas Tree, however this year many of the business owners in those areas have asked us to ‘turn on’ the lights early. So that they could get maximum benefit of the twinkling lights, as the weather improved and workers and residents started to enjoy the warmer evenings at cafes and bars.

Braddon

Canberra CBD Limited has been working on options to add some additional parking along Mort and Lonsdale Streets. TAMS transport officials have reviewed the proposals and Sellick’s traffic engineers are presently working on a report regarding the impact on pedestrians and vehicle traffic for each of the options. The results of this work will be distributed to all property owners in Braddon for their comments.
Other initiatives for Braddon include increased lighting and further promotional activities. The Tilt buskers and the Groovin entertainers have been roving along Lonsdale Street entertaining the lunch time crowds.

City Murals – Riverside Lane

Canberra CBD Limited has organised another major City Mural. This time the whole of Riverside Lane will be turned into a landscaped masterpiece however not with plants but with paints.
The murals will be painted all around the walls of Riverside Lane and on the ActewAGL substation. At the same time a bin enclosure will be erected to house the garbage hoppers which have been reduced from 11 to 3 with the help of the BusinessSmart initiative.

The Groovin in the City program is organised in conjunction with the Chief Minister's Department. It continues in January/February with expanded locations, which include strolling buskers along Mort and Lonsdale Streets, Veterans Park, rock bands in Glebe Park and entertainers outside the Boulevard .

Of course the festivities will still occur along City Walk at Petrie Plaza, Ainslie Ave and Garema Place and the very popular Hobart Place.
For a full list of the program log on to www.inthecitycanberra.com.au

French Theme
During January and February ‘Groovin’ will take on a French theme to entertain the many visitors that will be in Canberra for the Post Impressionist Exhibition, "Masterpieces of Paris" at the National Gallery of Australia ‘Masterpieces of Paris’. This exhibition will be advertised extensively in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane and because Canberra is the only Australian location for these works of art from the Musee d ’Orsay we are expecting many visitors.

AFP/Crime stoppers – 1800 333 000

ACT Policing has been working closely with Canberra CBD Limited this year to help promote a vibrant and safe City centre. Part of achieving this involves information flowing back to police. Although ACT Policing appreciates that reporting seemingly minor incidents may at times seem an inconvenience to the running of a business, particularly where there may seem to be little chance that an offender can be identified, it is still vital that you do so. Without those reports it is difficult for police to obtain an accurate idea of what types of activity, the locations and times that incidents occur. Incidents that may seem small often assist in painting a bigger picture of criminal and anti-social activity and can often be linked to other incidents where more information is known.

We all know that Canberra Connect is the ACT Government’s Gateway for information, payments and services. Whether you need to renew your licence, pay a bill or obtain information about ACT Government programs or services, Canberra Connect can help. Through the Canberra Connect Contact Centre, on 13 22 81, you can also report issues to the ACT Government related to sharps, graffiti, rubbish, broken or faulty parking meters, abandoned vehicles, damaged footpaths or roads and more. When these type of issues are bought to Nicci’s attention she contacts Canberra Connect and then follows up with our many TAMS contacts.

Nicci received the following email and the photo above illustrates the results 10 days later.

'The mailboxes out the front of the old Beaurepaires premises in Lonsdale Street are generating a lot of complaints when it rains. As there is no paving or concrete surrounding the two mailboxes it just turns to mud when it is wet and it is very difficult to post anything without getting your feet wet.

Is it possible to do something about rectifying this?'

Thanks

‘Prior to opening my new cafe, The Sour Cherry, in the Boulevard, there were serious pavement and tree problems in the public area outside my premises. I liaised with Canberra CBD Limited who advised me to call Canberra Connect. Within a week of calling, the trip hazards were repaired and the dead branches in the trees removed. This was the first time I have used Canberra Connect and the speedy response was highly impressive. Thank you.’

Interpretive signage for the Sydney and Melbourne Buildings

Sydney & Melbourne Buildings under construction 1927 (Credit: ACT Heritage Library)

The ACT Heritage Unit, part of the Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS), has received funding to provide interpretive signage for the Melbourne and Sydney Buildings, portraying many colourful stories of the past.

This is a wonderful opportunity to promote the history of both buildings, and celebrate their continuing contribution to the Civic Centre.

The ACT Heritage Unit has prepared draft text and images for the signs, and would like your input before finalising these with their graphic designer. The drafts are available for viewing on the TAMS website at www.tams.act.gov.au/live/heritage/sydmelb_draftsignage

It’s proposed that one sign will be placed on the inside arch in each of the four corners of the buildings, to sit flush against the wall. A larger, three-panelled triangular sign is proposed for the median strip on Northbourne Avenue between the two buildings.

Existing standard templates which have been used for other heritage signage projects throughout the ACT will be used to ensure consistency. An example is provided on the TAMS website.

Please contact the ACT Heritage Unit by Friday 18 December 2009 to provide any comments, feedback or suggestions; if you know of any other interesting stories; or if you have any images that you think should be included on the signs.

The ACT Heritage Unit can be contacted on 6207 7302 or by email to anna.gurnhill@act.gov.au
