Canberra Winter Festival – Ice, Ice Baby!

We are very pleased to confirm that our major project for this Winter will be installing an ice skating rink in Garema Place. The rink will be open to the public for day and night time skating sessions during the month of July.
The team behind the recent Groovin’ in the City (Tom-Tom Marketing & Events) have engaged Sydney company Stars on Ice to install and manage the rink which will also host a number of special events and performances. Think fashion shows, dancing, ice hockey demonstrations, specialty European food, ice carving, Christmas in July, speed skating, DJ’s, markets, buskers and special school holiday events. There is sure to be something for everyone of all ages from 5 to 95. The program will also feature Monday-Friday 45 minute skate sessions targeted at the City’s office workers who wish to do something different with their lunch hour.
The skating area will be a 15m x 30m structure, open air with a roof covering to allow for lighting. The rink will accommodate 200 skaters per session and there will be an additional sales and skate hire tent, plus tiered seating areas, gas heaters and public toilet facilities. Patrons will be able to purchase specialty food items like poffertjes, hot chocolate, mulled wine and German sausages, and an ice machine will be added to further enhance the atmosphere.
This event has already received much media coverage and extremely positive feedback from a wide cross section of Canberrans. We hope that the popularity of the event will provide an extra boost for local businesses and that traders might like to get on board with the program, perhaps offering specials for skating patrons. If there is anything you would like to discuss regarding the event please contact our office on 6162 4292 or email info@canberracbdlimited.com.au. Also look out for regular news updates on our website – www.inthecitycanberra.com.au.

Groovin' in the City
The Groovin’ in the City lunchtime entertainment program has wrapped up for another year and our research revealed that the public was very happy with the revised program featuring daily acts Tuesday to Friday. This year’s program was made extra special by the inclusion of our Capture the Groovin’ Photography Competition.
We are pleased to announce the inaugural first place winner – Graham Bancroft, 63, of Weston, with his glorious shot taken during Magic & Illusions week. Graham started taking photos in 2004 after watching a TV program about digital photography. He enjoys photography as a hobby now that he is retired, and very much appreciated the opportunities that Groovin’ in the City provided for some out-of-the-ordinary subject matter. We spoke with Graham when he visited our office for the presentation of the winners’ cheques by the Chairman of the Board, Emmanuel Notaras.
Q: Graham, you were a regular contributor to the competition with some fantastic entries – how did you feel about your winning photograph?
A: I was very pleased to win with that one as it is the one I like most out of all the entries I submitted. It certainly put a smile on my face for quite a while.
Q: What did you enjoy most about Groovin’ in the City?
A: I really enjoyed the variety of entertainment, the interaction between entertainers and the public, and of course the reaction of children to the performers.
Q: Do you have any special plans for your prize money?
A: I plan to share the winnings with my wife and buy some new camera gear for myself.
Melita Caulfield took out the second place $1,000 prize, having captured a beautiful moment of a little girl enjoying the Artists on the Floor display. Third place in the competition ($500) went to Rhonda Mercieca, whose creative close up of one of Erth Theatre Co.’s dinosaur puppets really reflected the popularity of the show with the crowds of children.
It was a pleasure to judge this competition over the past 24 weeks and we extend a huge thank you to all the other entrants who showed us sides of our City that we would probably otherwise never see. All of this would not have been possible without the support of the City businesses who generously donated prizes for our weekly winners. Thanks to:
Angus & Robertson, Bendigo Bank, Blue Olive, Dendy Cinemas, Eckersley’s Art & Craft, Franco of Canberra, Miranda Hi-Fi, Mooble, Onya Bike, PJ O’Reilly’s, Price Attack, Shop Handmade and Tosolini’s.
We would also like to thank Jennifer, Jade, Natasha & PJ at Tom-Tom Events & Marketing for their dedication and great work throughout Groovin’ in the City.
Canberra Festival Wrap Up
The Canberra Festival has ended for another year and the You Are Here component proved to be a hit with many workers and visitors to the City, young and old alike. Temporarily filling up vacant shopfronts to give up-and-coming artists a platform to showcase their work, the festival featured in a wide array of locations across the City. Events included the Carpark Festival in Odgers Lane, the Art-is-An Bread maker, Re-Loved Creations Pop-up Shop, Roller Derby Rally and the Lights! Lights! Lights! Party.
Property owner Harry Notaras, who donated the use of some of his vacant premises’ for parts of the event, was very pleased with the result. “The You Are Here Festival was an enormous success and had an immediate impact on the mid-city precinct surrounding the premises at the Saraton Building. The arts program was hugely entertaining and drew strong interest. The Last Prom event was immensely popular and saw a large crowd gather in East Row. This festival generated a very positive atmosphere in an area that has been lacklustre in recent times.”
There was an equally positive response on Facebook:
“Thanks for the best ten days this town has ever seen…pretty inspired right now!”
“Dear You Are Here festival - don't stop. Please continue. Please.”
“The very first Re-Loved Creations pop-up shop was a huge success. Thank you to all for supporting local designers and artists.”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you for a lovely few days in the city of Canberra. The Festival was brilliant.”
Milk & Bread Crates
Over the past year, there have been many attempts seeking cooperation in removing crates and pallets from the laneways and surrounding areas in a timely manner. This has been an ongoing issue and we have been receiving complaint after complaint of how untidy the laneways are from both property owners as well as traders. To manage this issue in the short term we have resorted to hiring a contractor to pick up and store the items for a two week period so that we can gather stats on just how much litter is being generated in our laneways by these items.
In future, TAMS will treat these items as litter if they are not stacked neatly in the laneways and picked up in a timely manner. Crate owners will be given notice to remove crates, and when they want to reclaim the crates they will need to pay for the costs incurred.
In the City Magazine
The latest edition of our “In the City” magazine is out now. 240 City Walk
It's only been open for two weeks but look out for this small and oh so cute cafe tucked away at the rear of the foyer in GIO House. With a vibe more like something you’d stumble upon in a Melbourne Laneway, the cafe also houses a tiny stage with plans for jam sessions and performances. They have great fairtrade coffee, all day breakfasts and a wide range of meals and snacks.
QLD Flood Relief Fundraising
Crowds of visitors to the City helped raise over $240 for the flood appeal during our Australia Day week of Groovin’ in the City lunch time entertainment. Punters were invited to paint their own t-shirts and pairs of thongs and make a donation to take their creation home with them.
Guitar duo Sam & Riley Catherall who played in Braddon during Guitar Fest week also raised $423 at the height of the flood crisis.
Congratulations also to the many City businesses that spent a lot of time and money participating in fundraising events of their own.
